Numerical Study of the Effect of Materials’ Plastic Behavior on Equibiaxial Residual Stress Measurement Using Indentation

Indentation is a new method for estimating residual stress. The plastic behavior of the materials under study can affect indentation parameters and, thus, influences the results of residual stress measurement. In this paper, the effect of yield stress and work-hardening exponent on the accuracy of residual stress measurements in steels and aluminums was studied. Results showed that, for m...

Remarks on Residual Stress Measurement by Hole-Drilling and Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry

Hole drilling is the most widespread method for measuring residual stress. It is based on the principle that drilling a hole in the material causes a local stress relaxation; the initial residual stress can be calculated by measuring strain in correspondence with each drill depth. Recently optical techniques were introduced to measure strain; in this case, the accuracy of the final results depe...

Dual-axis Hole-drilling Espi Residual Stress Measurements

A dual-axis ESPI hole-drilling residual stress measurement method is described. It has the advantage of evaluating all the in-plane normal stress components with similar response to measurement errors, significantly lower than with single-axis measurements. Experimental tests were done on a stressed specimen, and the results supported theoretical expectations.
